ABOUT IRENE
Irene Kaoru Malatesta is a graphic designer, artist and writer from Seattle, living and working in Manhattan. In 2008, she completed a program in graphic arts and digital design at Parsons the New School for Design. In 2001, she moved to New York to attend Barnard College, where she earned a B.A. with honors in Art History, completing a senior thesis under direction of Benjamin Buchloh on the work of Daniel Buren and 20th century Conceptual art. While at Barnard, she interned at the Andrea Rosen Gallery in Chelsea and became increasingly interested in photography, choosing to work in black and white film, producing dark still life and landscape images and delving into self portraiture, often with a theatrical and vintage style.
Her work in graphic and digital design for print and the web feeds her interest in digital photography; she now works in color and black and white, digital and film, and continues to be attracted to the themes of control, authenticity and performance involved in modeling and photographing. Her "Choreography" photo series explores greater visual abstraction as it deals with light and the photographer as subject, using extremely long exposures and dancing with the camera to capture the light as a visual trace of her movements.
Her documentary photography has been featured online by the Tranzducer event series, Original Cyn Burlesque, the New York Blip Festival, and the chiptune/electronic band Burnkit2600. In Spring 2007, her work was featured in the group shows at "Outrageous Fortune" and "ArtCrime", part up-and-coming art exhibitions, part Lower East Side dance parties. During Fall 2007, her work was shown at the LOVE parties at Hotel QT and at Satsko in the East Village.
